Cancellation of Vergina Tour on June 17th
We regret to infom you that due to the upcoming elections on Sunday June 17 all archaelogical sites and museums will be closed.
Delegates who have booked the Vergina Tour are kindly requested to contact the main registration desk to cancel or change their participation.
The excursion/cruise to Mount Athos will materialize on schedule (June 17), but we will also announce the Thessaloniki Tour on the same day. There is also a chance the Archaeological museum of Thessaloniki to be open during the first shift/watch, but we will have this information only on Friday.
In addittion we will organize two tours on Saturday June 16, Vergina and Thessaloniki, where all sites and museums are open.
All above information will be available at the main registration desk, Athos Palace, Foyer Theodora.
VERGINA TOUR
DURATION: 8 hours (depending on the traffic).
A full-day tour to Vergina, ancient Aegae, is dedicated to a visit of the core of the ancient Macedonian civilization, particularly the cemetery with the Royal Tombs. The Great Tumulus, excavated by Professor Manolis Andronikos, is an amazing archaeological discovery of 1976. Leading monument, the Tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, unearthed with its entire original content of copious golden and silver artifacts of superior 4th century B.C. art. The unlooted Royal Tombs with their monumental architecture and their remarkable painted decoration are a unique introduction to the great Macedonian Civilization which culminates with Alexander’s conquests and the creation of his vast Empire.

MOUNT ATHOS CRUISE
DURATION: 10 hours
Transfer to Ormos Panayias port, in Halkidiki. We will board a cruise ship on a scheduled cruise, which will take us sailing along the west coast of Mount Athos. You will have the opportunity to view and take pictures of the Europe’s most unique Monk’s Republic. To this day, approximately 2000 male monks still live on this Holy Mountain and follow strict Byzantine rules and rituals. It is said that in its 1000-plus history, no woman has ever set foot on this Holy Mountain, with the exception of Mary Virgin!
Early in the afternoon, our boat will reach the quaint fishing village of Ouranoupolis. Time for optional lunch to taste authentic Greek seafood, fish delicacies and wine from the Mount-Athos vineyards. Following lunch, we depart to return to our hotel.

THESSALONIKI SIGHTSEEING TOUR
DURATION: 6 hours
Since the beginning of its history, Thessaloniki has been the leading city of the Greek North and of the southernmost extremity of the Balkans, the first port of the northern Aegean. It is considered as an Open Museum, with innumerous monuments from the ancient Greek and Roman times, onto the Byzantine era, during which for more than 11 centuries it served as the second most important city of the vast Empire.
Our day includes a thorough walking tour of the City, starting from the Theodosian Walls and the Acropolis, on to the Patriarchical Monastery of Vlatades, the Monastery of Osios David with its unique mosaic of the 5th century, the Holy Church of St. Demetrios, a superb Basilica dedicated to the Patron Saint of the City, the Roman Agora, Emperor Galerius’ Roman Complex, finally St. Sophia with its unsurpassed mosaics, one of the several monuments of Thessaloniki included in the list of the UNESCO Heritage Sites. By the waterfront we will see the White Tower, landmark of the City for centuries, and finally explore the Ladadika district, an old commercial neighborhood, traditional and lively with restaurants and cafes, with time on your own for a lunch break, and a taste of the famous Thessaloniki cuisine.

Meal Plans

Breakfast is included with the accommodation at G-Hotels. Lunches and dinners are not included in the registration fee. There are several options in the G-Hotels complex. A nearby town offers more opportunities for sampling the local cuisine.
